Set and track goals
A work in progress — some sections are written, others are still being filled in.
A goal is a target on a bucket — an amount by a date, or a recurring per-cycle amount. It is configuration over the bucket, never a separate pot: contributing is an ordinary allocation. Progress is counted gross, so drawing the bucket down does not erase the ground you made.
Where goals live
Because a goal belongs to a bucket, there is no separate goals screen to keep in step with your budget. Open a bucket from the Buckets list and its goal is there, beside what the bucket holds. To see what is coming due across all of them, switch the list to its Goals lens: the same buckets, filtered to those carrying a goal and ordered by deadline, soonest first.
Changing a goal
Two different things can happen to a goal, and Duration keeps them apart because they mean different things:
- Correcting it. You typed 3 000 and meant 30 000, or you dated the goal today when it really began in June. This edits the goal as it stands, and it is the ordinary case — so it is the default.
- Scheduling a change. From September the target becomes something else. This leaves the goal alone until the date you choose and applies the new target from there. The earlier version stays in your history, so what the goal asked for last spring is still on the record.
You never have to use the second to get the first. Corrections are named in the goal’s history (“declared 11 July · edited 4 August”) rather than hidden, so the record stays honest either way.
This guide will cover setting a goal, reading its progress, how a drawdown is treated, and how a goal’s start date decides which contributions count toward it.
